Te reo Māori: Govt seeks to halt extra pay for public servants fluent in the language
I wonder if they are going to cut pay for public servants who are fluent in SQL too.
It’s petty and obviously idealogical.
A quick reminder of this ironic high-level timeline, which would be a funny skit, if it wasn’t happening in real life.
1. Numerous government assimilation-focused policies. Te Reo Māori nearly lost to an entire nation while Te Tiriti o Waitangi sits literally lost in a drawer being eaten by rats.
2. Māori fight and challenge over decades to ensure the language is protected, revitalised, and not lost, by being spoken more.
3. Airline CEO applies to trademark the Māori word ‘kia ora’ for his company reliant on international tourism.
4. Government led by said CEO attempts to make te reo Māori spoken less in his new ‘company’ ie. the public sector.
