Actions by new government will make NZ fall behind as ‘world leader in indigenous rights’ – scholar

I have two tests to determine how worldly a kiwi (normally business person is).

  1. Whether or not they complain about “red tape”
  2. Whether or not they complain about <nasal tone> “The Maoris”

If they do complain about “1” then I know they have never done anything substantive overseas and are parochial fools. If they do complain about “2” they have never noticed the esteem that Māori have gained in the rest of the world… and they never see how it help all kiwis.

“It’s really unfortunate because New Zealand was, with some other states like Canada, at the fore of trying to come up with practical ways in which to realise the UN declaration and now we are no longer doing that obviously so we’re falling behind our counterparts in realising indigenous people’s rights.”

I often tell people in the US that NZ is 50 years in the future because of the Treaty.
