About 10 or so years ago I was privy to the mechanics of a prominent left-wing party here in NZ. The single thing that stuck out: they were afraid of winning, because that meant they had to be The Man.
It is very hard to be The Man when you’re identity is tied up in fighting The Man.
The mahi required to create the society we want is one that requires muscular realism. Ignoring the nature of the game just means ceding the board every single time.
