Fresh off of his bruising defeat in the midterm elections, Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced that the carmaker is winding down production of one of his most beloved pet projects, the Cybertruck.

It’s hard to overstate how perfect an avatar of the last decade the Cybertruck is. It was a misanthropic machine, marketed as apocalypse-proof and driven by toxic masculinity. It hated the rest of us and was proud of it. We hated it back, and it said “fuck you, I own the roads.” That its end was announced just days after the 2026 midterms feels like more than coincidence: it’s another sign of the beginning of the end of the toxic, wealth-fuelled abuse we’ve all had to weather since Trump came down the golden escalator.
